What storms have done here

Tybee takes the brunt of tropical weather. During Hurricane Matthew in October 2016, National Weather Service sensors on Tybee Island recorded gusts of 82 and 83 knots (about 94–96 mph). The NWS reported "numerous trees were blown down across interior sections of Tybee Island," including several large trees on homes along U.S. Highway 80, with preliminary inundation of 5–6 feet near the shoreline. Hurricane Idalia brought a 69 mph gust to South Tybee Island in August 2023.

Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. Having trees near the house inspected and deadwood removed before the August–October peak, and securing loose items, are common steps. See our hurricane-season tree prep guide.

Salt, sand and Tybee's watering rules

Salt water over lawns after storm surge is a real concern on a barrier island. UGA describes seashore paspalum as the most salt-tolerant warm-season turf; St. Augustine, zoysia, centipede and bermuda are the other common coastal lawns. Ask for a soil test before re-sodding.

The City of Tybee Island lists the same three-day schedule used around Savannah as permanent and year-round (details in the FAQ below). Its exemptions also cover installing or calibrating an irrigation system.

Services Tybee Island homeowners request quotes for

Lawn and garden cleanup typically runs $143–$380 per visit, and tree removal averages about $652 (typical ranges from published cost guides (2026) — estimates, not quotes). See the landscaping prices page for more.

Before you remove a tree

In the City of Savannah, trees on city property, including the tree lawn between the sidewalk and the street, are managed by the City. Rules for trees on private lots depend on your property type and whether development is involved. Before removing a large tree, check with the City of Savannah (savannahga.gov) or your county. Unincorporated Chatham County, Pooler and Richmond Hill have their own rules. We did not find Tybee's own tree rules on an official city page, so ask the City of Tybee Island before removing a large tree. Georgia has no arborist license; ask about ISA certification (a private credential; verify at isa-arbor.com), liability insurance and workers' comp for the crew. This is general information, not legal advice.

Tybee Island lawn care FAQ

What are the watering rules on Tybee Island?

The City of Tybee Island lists permanent, year-round rules that apply even with no drought declared: water only between 4 p.m. and 10 a.m., never on Fridays, with even-numbered addresses on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday and odd-numbered addresses on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. New landscapes for 30 days, drip lines and hand watering are exempt.

What grass holds up to salt on Tybee Island?

UGA describes seashore paspalum as the most salt-tolerant warm-season turf and well adapted to salt-affected coastal sites. St. Augustine, zoysia, centipede and bermuda are the other common coastal choices. Ask each company which grass fits your sun, sand and salt exposure, and start with a soil test before you replace a lawn.
